Biology Sector

As regards biological research and monitoring, SELC is specialised in lagoon and coastal research..

The knowledge gained since the late '80s and the large number of tasks completed and in progress, allow SELC to qualify among the largest private organizations working in the field of environmental investigations in the northern Adriatic.

The numerous scientific publications presented are the evidences of the work quality, the contribution to the knowledge of the lagoon's biological communities, of the wetlands and coastal marine, demonstrate the capacity to disseminate technical and scientific results and information obtained, particular that has always distinguished SELC than the competition and that has allowed, over time, creating a proactive and important collaborations with academia and the public and private research.

The main areas of activity in the organic sector are:

  • Monitoring and study of lagoonal, coastal and inland biological communities (marine phanerogams, macroalgae, benthos, fouling, emerged vegetation, birds and terrestrial vertebrates), and undersea explorations;

  • Systematic determination of macro-and micro-algae, zoobenthos, higher plants;

  • Realization of vegetation, wildlife and landscape maps;

  • GIS analysis & mapping;

  • Cooperation in StudyResearch on Environmental Impact as regards the Existing Condition and Evaluation of Impact;

  • Appropriate Assessment for projects impacting SPAs or SCIs;

  • Collection, appraisal, interpretation, filing and processing of environmental and territorial data;

  • Work to endorse the restoration, use and management of lagoonal, lacustrine, lagoons, riverine and coastal wetlands, including environmental engineering;

  • Aid in planning and carrying out work of morphological, environmental, landscape, and building restoration.

Recently SELC has set up a new Soil Laboratory in which all soil standard tests are performed. In this way Biology sector has expanded its investigation potential, offering new types of services and greater interdisciplinary analysis capacity.

International Site of Interest - Porto Marghera

Investigation activities, conducted by SELC regarding the dynamics of aquifers connected with the operations in the SIN Porto Marghera on behalf of the Consorzio Venezia Nuova - Water Authority of Venice, were concluded. The aim of the project was to provide insights for the management of the works already undertaken and to direct the design of new interventions.
Investigations at the mouth of the Lido of Venice

At the pier south of the mouth of the Lido of Venice were conducted soil tests and characterization of marine sediments (DGRV 1019/2010) , with running of geognostic and CPTU investigations from platform to -30m deep. Samplings were carried out by boat by using a hydraulic vibrocorer; the samples were subsequently analyzed with regard to chemical, microbiological and geotechnical's aspects.
SELC NEWS CHANNEL

Online the new business news channel where will be published the latest multimedia content related to SELC activites.
Monitoraggio CORILA

In 2011 the collaboration between SELC and CORILA was continued for monitoring the terrestrial vegetation, the seagrasses and the terrestrial insects in the Venice lagoon.
MITO2000 in Friuli Venezia Giulia Region

During 2012 Spring will be made the third year of monitoring of breeding birds, conducted according to the methods of the project MITO2000, on behalf of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region. The survey will be done in more than 300 point counts.
Water Framework Directive (Direttiva Acque 2000/60)

As part of biological monitoring carried out on behalf of the Veneto Region-ARPAV for transitional environments, SELC had conducted during 2011 assessments on the state of quality of the Lagoon of Venice for the zoobenthic component.
New Bioengineering activities

Experimental transplant of seagrass (Cymodocea nodosa and Zostera marina) in the lagoon of Venicewas completed. The operations were carried out using servo-assisted methods and clumps of large (> 1 square meter). The surgery was successful and ongoing monitoring showed high rates of colonization and low mortality.

New investigations on the Venetian Tegnùe

As part of a larger project by the Veneto Region and Water Authority of Venice in 2010-2011, SELC has conducted biological investigations on rocky outcrops a few kilometers off the coast, known as Venetian Tegnùe.

New mapping of seagrasses and macroalgae in the Lagoon of Venice

On behalf of the Water Authority of Venice has been updated to 2010 the mapping of seagrasses and macroalgae for the entire lagoon.
