Geological Investigations

The highly integrated sectors of geology and biology, coupled with the know-how developed over the years to allows to offer support at all levels for implementation of Environmental Studies and surveys of various kinds:

  • Analysis of sediments for the excavation of sea- and riverbeds for shore refilling. (Ministerial Decree of January 24, 1996).

Operating procedures

This type of research is carried out with a series of mechanical soundings with either rotary core borers with double core barrels, or vibra core, which are placed at dredge depth according to the standard proposed by the Ministerial Decree of January 24, 1996.

Vibrocorer System

Sediment specimens are collected at established levels from seafloors, brackish environments and shores, and undergo physical, chemical and microbiological analyses to determine their properties.

  • Analysis of sediment for the excavation, transport, and re-utilisation of mud taken from the Venetian canals. (Ministry of the Environment – Protocol of Agreement April 8, 1993).

Operating procedures

This type of research is carried out with a series of mechanical borings and/or samplings with special tools (Shelby or Beeker samplers), placed according to the standard proposed by the according Protocol.

Beeker sampler and accessories

Sediment specimens undergo physical and chemical analyses to determine the properties of material to be excavated in the lagoonal environment, and therefore its use and location for the restoration of lagoonal morphologies.

  • Mechanical rotary drilling by continual coring:

Crawler- or wheel-mounted hydro-mechanical borers
  • Collection of undisturbed and remoulded specimens with geotechnical samplers
    (Shelby, Osterberg, Denison,  Raymond samplers)

Ostemberg sampler (Undisturbed specimens)
Raymond sampler (Remoulded Specimens SPT)

  • In-situ testing inside the borehole
    (SPT, permeability tests, etc.)

Power hammer for SPT tests
  • Installation of open-tube or Casagrande piezometers

Casagrande piezometer
  • Hydrogeological monitoring
with data loggers and multiparametric augers

Pressure transducer and device for the collection of data used to monitor groundwater levels
Diagram of groundwater monitoring
  • Pump tests for the identification of hydraulic parameters of groundwater
    mobile support unit

Mobile unit (well + 12 monitored piezometers)
  • CPT penetration tests with mechanical or electric drills with dynamic cone penetrometer (CPTU)
both on land and in water

Static penetration test in water
  • Soil and water specimens undergo chemico-physical analyses
as prescribed by the governing Ministerial Decree

  • Chemical-environmental research through radiometric surveys, and radio-chemical research

    Operating procedures

This type of research is carried out with a series of mechanical soundings and/or samplings with special tools (Shelby and Beeker samplers, Osterberg), radiometric surveys and radiochemical soil tests to assess:

    • environmental radioactivity in the analysed area (measured at 1 and 0.1 m from the ground); (this is then compared with data on the regional reference level);
    • external gamma radiation;
    • gaseous radioactive effluence (222Rn and radioactive series);
    • Liquid or dissolved radioactive effluence which may be released by contaminated soil/sediments following rain or groundwater run-off.

This work is implemented by chemical analyses of soil/sediment sampling.

NEWS
International Site of Interest - Porto Marghera

Investigation activities, conducted by SELC regarding the dynamics of aquifers connected with the operations in the SIN Porto Marghera on behalf of the Consorzio Venezia Nuova - Water Authority of Venice, were concluded. The aim of the project was to provide insights for the management of the works already undertaken and to direct the design of new interventions.
Investigations at the mouth of the Lido of Venice

At the pier south of the mouth of the Lido of Venice were conducted soil tests and characterization of marine sediments (DGRV 1019/2010) , with running of geognostic and CPTU investigations from platform to -30m deep. Samplings were carried out by boat by using a hydraulic vibrocorer; the samples were subsequently analyzed with regard to chemical, microbiological and geotechnical's aspects.
SELC NEWS CHANNEL

Online the new business news channel where will be published the latest multimedia content related to SELC activites.
Monitoraggio CORILA

In 2011 the collaboration between SELC and CORILA was continued for monitoring the terrestrial vegetation, the seagrasses and the terrestrial insects in the Venice lagoon.
MITO2000 in Friuli Venezia Giulia Region

During 2012 Spring will be made the third year of monitoring of breeding birds, conducted according to the methods of the project MITO2000, on behalf of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region. The survey will be done in more than 300 point counts.
Water Framework Directive (Direttiva Acque 2000/60)

As part of biological monitoring carried out on behalf of the Veneto Region-ARPAV for transitional environments, SELC had conducted during 2011 assessments on the state of quality of the Lagoon of Venice for the zoobenthic component.
New Bioengineering activities

Experimental transplant of seagrass (Cymodocea nodosa and Zostera marina) in the lagoon of Venicewas completed. The operations were carried out using servo-assisted methods and clumps of large (> 1 square meter). The surgery was successful and ongoing monitoring showed high rates of colonization and low mortality.

New investigations on the Venetian Tegnùe

As part of a larger project by the Veneto Region and Water Authority of Venice in 2010-2011, SELC has conducted biological investigations on rocky outcrops a few kilometers off the coast, known as Venetian Tegnùe.

New mapping of seagrasses and macroalgae in the Lagoon of Venice

On behalf of the Water Authority of Venice has been updated to 2010 the mapping of seagrasses and macroalgae for the entire lagoon.
