Geotecnnical Laboratory |
In 1998, SELC founded the SELC geo-laboratory to satisfy its customers’ demand for geotechnical analyses.
Over the years, SELC has improved its geotechnical sector by investing its profits in the development of its human and technological resources. Good collaborators provide a good company standard, and technological investments provide productivity and good quality.
In 2003, the laboratory acquired the name SELC GEOLAB, and became independent within the company.
SELC GEOLAB currently collaborates with several laboratories and universities.
SELC’s projects are:
-
to provide top quality, reliable and impartial analytical results;
-
to provide customer care which satisfies and anticipates customers’ future needs by using modern technology and skilled, specialised personnel;
-
to collect information on the regulations in force, and improve the services offered through data banks and specialised publications;
-
to upgrade sampling, data analysis and technical reports;
-
to provide its technicians and customers professional updating.
Quality Management System is UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 certified, developed according with UNI CEI IEN / IEC ISO 17025:2000.
The geologist Daniele Are is both director of the laboratory and sales manager of the company..
OUR GEOTECHNICAL SERVICES:
-

-
Attemberg limits (ASTM D4318)
-
Calcimetric test (Soc. Geol. It.)
-
Test to determine the one-dimensional consolidating properties of soil using controlled strain loading (ASTM D2435)
-
Triaxial compression test (ASTM D2850)
-
Direct shear test (ASTM D3080)
-
Unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soil (ASTM D2166)
-
Compacting test (ASTM D698)
-
In-situ density and unit weight of soil (ASTM D1556)
Geotechnical laboratory tests are still the most commonly used methods for the identification of the physical-mechanical parameters of soil.
Tests are carried out on all types of soil, i.e., clay, silt, sand, gravel, and typical lagoonal sediments in particular.

PARTICLE-SIZE ANALYSIS OF SOIL: it analyses the size of solid soil particles and the percentage of established fractions out of the analysed quantity. The high definition of our laser instrument Mastersize 2000 enables us to analyse not only the particle size of soil, but also that of other substances |
ATTERBERG LIMITS: they define the physical conditions of soil –liquid, plastic, semi-solid and solid. |

Test to determine the one-dimensional consolidating properties of soil using controlled strain loading: this test shows the natural consolidation of soil in the following conditions: when soil is restrained laterally, drained axially, and subjected to controlled strain loading. It is also used for permeability tests. |
UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF COHESIVE SOIL: this test determines the unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soil under the pressure of an axial load.
DIRECT SHEAR TEST: it experimentally measures the consolidated drained shear strength of soil specimens. The test is carried out by deforming specimens at controlled strain rates on a single shear plane, according to the configuration of the apparatus. |
STANDARD COMPACTING TEST (PROCTOR): it is used to increase the density of refilling soil. Thus, the compressive strength of soil decreases, shear strength increases, and permeability and water absorption reduce.
IN-SITU DENSITY AND UNIT WEIGHT OF SOIL: in-situ measurement of volume weight and water content of superficial soil. In particular, it is applied to works on land (embankments, dams, banks, etc.) to check that their density is consistent with that of projects, according to laboratory compacting tests.

International Site of Interest - Porto Marghera
Investigation activities, conducted by SELC regarding the dynamics of aquifers connected with the operations in the SIN Porto Marghera on behalf of the Consorzio Venezia Nuova - Water Authority of Venice, were concluded. The aim of the project was to provide insights for the management of the works already undertaken and to direct the design of new interventions. |
Investigations at the mouth of the Lido of Venice
At the pier south of the mouth of the Lido of Venice were conducted soil tests and characterization of marine sediments (DGRV 1019/2010) , with running of geognostic and CPTU investigations from platform to -30m deep. Samplings were carried out by boat by using a hydraulic vibrocorer; the samples were subsequently analyzed with regard to chemical, microbiological and geotechnical's aspects. |
SELC NEWS CHANNEL
Online the new business news channel where will be published the latest multimedia content related to SELC activites. |
Monitoraggio CORILA
In 2011 the collaboration between SELC and CORILA was continued for monitoring the terrestrial vegetation, the seagrasses and the terrestrial insects in the Venice lagoon. |
MITO2000 in Friuli Venezia Giulia Region
During 2012 Spring will be made the third year of monitoring of breeding birds, conducted according to the methods of the project MITO2000, on behalf of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region. The survey will be done in more than 300 point counts. |
Water Framework Directive (Direttiva Acque 2000/60)
As part of biological monitoring carried out on behalf of the Veneto Region-ARPAV for transitional environments, SELC had conducted during 2011 assessments on the state of quality of the Lagoon of Venice for the zoobenthic component. |
New Bioengineering activities
Experimental transplant of seagrass (Cymodocea nodosa and Zostera marina) in the lagoon of Venicewas completed. The operations were carried out using servo-assisted methods and clumps of large (> 1 square meter). The surgery was successful and ongoing monitoring showed high rates of colonization and low mortality.
